Packets of Cinnamon. Genius idea right? It’s one of those things that makes you say “I wish I’d thought of that”. Well, someone did and it’s about dang time.
A few days ago, my husband sent me a message from a friend of his. He asked if I had ever heard of these cinnamon packets and also asked if I would consider writing a post to share my love of cinnamon. I said absolutely and here we are.
Will and Katrina started this cinnamon revolution and it takes a lot of guts to start a business. They are a military family, like us, and we support each other. They are making this work and I would love to see them succeed.
So, why am I writing about it? It’s all about the nutrition. Herbs and spices do not get their fair share of Press and they should be right up there with the trendy superfoods of the year.
There has been a lot of research done on the effects of cinnamon and its potential is high. Below is a brief overview on the potential health benefits of cinnamon and where you can go to learn more.
- Anti-inflammatory: Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years as a treatment for age-related inflammation. This is important because inflammation is found in so many chronic diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, ulcerative colitis, and many others. This is what we want to fight.
- Diabetes Management: This does not mean ditch your insulin. This means that in animal studies, researchers found components of cinnamon that exhibited insulin like properties. More research is needed on this – but definitely cool.
- Antioxidant: This is the most overused term in nutrition, but it’s still an important one. Cinnamon possesses some potent antioxidant activity, which is important when we talk about eating to fight and reduce the risk of cancer.
Those are 3 big ones that researchers are continuing to study. Health researchers everywhere are working to find the benefits in food that aid in the prevention of disease, before it is necessary to have medication for treatment.
It’s always important to stay educated, so below, there are some links to research that are worth reviewing if you have the time or if you just want to see if I’m right – that’s okay to0.
Adding a cinnamon packet (or two) to an already healthy diet is a great idea. If you want to sprinkle some antioxidants on your chai latte, go for it.
Nutrition Tip for the Day: Flavor your foods with spices, like cinnamon, instead of sugar or salt to cut down on calories!
