We love popcorn and we love jazzing up our popcorn. We rarely eat it plain and why would we? It’s a blank canvas, perfect for creative minds. We have some seasoning blends that we love putting on popcorn and that makes it easy, but sometimes, we like to make our own, like today.
Nutritionally, popcorn is where it’s at. It’s a whole grain and low in calories, so what’s not to love? Add nutritious seasonings and you have a different snack every night and a serving of whole grains. Did I mention that you can eat 2 cups of air popped popcorn for less than 100 calories? I’d say that’s a good deal.
Making your own savory popcorn is really easy. I pop my own popcorn on the stove, but if you aren’t comfortable with that or just lack the inclination to do it, that’s okay. Start with plain popcorn and decide on a flavor. For this one I wanted dill, but I didn’t want it to taste like a pickle. So, I thought garlic would be a nice touch. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like a little parmesan on my popcorn, so I can often find a way to add that in.
You must have a way for the spices to stick, otherwise, they’ll just fall to the bottom of the bowl. Most people use butter, but I like to use olive oil, canola oil and on rare occasion, coconut oil.
Savory popcorn is such a treat and is the perfect snack for a party. Make a few and let your guests go wild. Better yet, make some and give away to neighbors, they will love it!
- 8 cups popped popcorn
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried dill
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
- 1/4 cup finely freshly grated parmesan cheese
- In a small saucepan over medium low heat, add olive oil, dill, garlic powder and salt
- Heat until just warm
- Drizzle over popped popcorn and toss to coat
- Sprinkle with finely grated parmesan
