Oh, the illustrious shamrock shake. The famous sugar loaded masterpiece that graces billboards and cupholders this time of year is something that I’ve actually never had. You heard right, I’ve never had a shamrock shake from the shiny golden arches, but I have looked at the nutritional values of it. Let’s just say, I won’t be trying one soon.
From what I hear, it’s a refreshing minty creamy delight. I do make a rocking mint chocolate chip frozen treat in my blender, so that was my inspiration for that.
Instead of a calorie busting belly bloat, you get 3 servings of fruit/veggies, protein, calcium and minimal (and I mean minimal added sugar – from those little slivers of chocolate on the top). Yep, that’s it.
So, what does this beauty have in it? Let’s go: Banana, spinach, avocado, milk, mint extract, and ice!
How do I make it a treat? I added a little unsweetened fresh whipped cream to the top and small shavings of chocolate. I love to add small shavings instead of mini chips to this, because it keeps my added sugar to an absolute tiny amount. Total bonus for my health right now.
She’s a beauty right? Truth be told, this was half of my lunch. You know, half of your meal should be fruit or vegetables, so I’m doing alright. But, if you are adding this to a meal, split it in half.
The recipe makes 1 shake, but like I always do, I make everything easy to multiply and divide to make as little or as much as you need.

- 1 packed cup fresh baby spinach
- ¼ ripe avocado
- ½ cup reduced fat milk (or non-dairy milk)
- ⅛ teaspoon mint extract
- 1 cup crushed ice
- 2 Tablespoons fresh whipped cream
