This explains my life right now. Except replace beer with wine. That’s me. Today was such a relaxing day. I actually did nothing. Well, not nothing. I carried out all the mom duties today. I cleaned the house, did some laundry, and went grocery shopping. I also got some Christmas gifts and took the Pepper dog out for a 2 mile run. She’s such a good running dog. So, when I say nothing, I mean mindless work.
I took one kid to swimming and let Lily stay home to do homework. Then it was basketball time for Lily tonight. I hate to say it, but mama bear came out tonight at basketball. I saw that some kids were not getting equal playing time and the bear…or wolf in me came out.
My Lily is a beast in the pool, she’s an amazing swimmer. She’s just not as good at basketball, but she loves playing and asks to play every year. This year it’s been tough. The boys on her team are pretty dang good…and rough. She’s not a hardcore aggressive player. But, it’s youth sports, not school sports, so that’s why we do it. Equal playing time regardless of ability. If I thought she had a future in basketball, she wouldn’t be doing on-base youth sports.
Anyway, I had to “chat” with the coach after basketball about these kids getting equal playing time. There was another little boy that sat out more than Lily, while other boys played the entire game. I was pretty angry. I had to remind him of his responsibilities as a youth coach. It’s for the kids to learn skills, not to win a championship. There is no championship.
If I don’t stand up for my kid, who will? We live in a world of winning, never thinking about inclusion. My heart broke for the little boy who sat on the bench for over half the game, while other boys played the entire time. How is he supposed to get better at basketball if he never plays?
So, getting back home, I have a child who thinks I am a miracle worker. She has a Christmas Attire Day on Wednesday and asked me tonight…at 8pm…if I can make her a cute little Christmas outfit. I had to run her through my day tomorrow and she’s going to settle for a Christmas skirt. thank goodness, I can sew a no pattern skirt on the fly.
I did cook the Jambalaya from my cookbook tonight. That’s always a winner in my house. Lily LOVES it and Luke always adds a little extra hot sauce on his. Eva can’t stand the heat, so she adds sour cream to tame the little bit of spice. Poor girl, she gets that from her mama.
Tomorrow is going to be awesome. My class ends tomorrow and I’m giving my final exam. I have gotten some really great feedback. Even though this class has been pretty challenging for my students, I think they learned a lot.
