Trust me, I’m no fool I am definitely aware that microwave popcorn already exists. You know what though? I don’t buy it anymore. I either make it on the stove top…or I make my own microwave popcorn. No more waiting 10 minutes for it to pop on the stove (I know, that’s really not that long, but we want everything faster, right?)
Let me tell you some advantages of this marvelous method
Whole Grains: You may not know that popcorn is a whole grain. Actually, it’s my favorite way to get more whole grains into my diet. Unfortunately, traditional microwave popcorn doesn’t count, because it is loaded with greasy grossness. That’s my term for that fat that coats your mouth – ek!
Season: Season this to your liking. Are you a straight salt person? Are you on a salt restricted diet? Use salt free seasonings or herbs from your cabinet to make your own creation. Use an olive oil spray to coat the popcorn and then season however you like.
Fast: We all want fast. Not only is this fast, but it is portion controlled fast. Two wins!
Cheap: An entire bag of popcorn cost me under a $1. So that means I made this snack for approximately 4 cents. Yep, no kidding. Pennies.
It’s filling: 2 Tablespoons of kernels is going to give about 4 cups of popped corn. I’d say that’s a pretty good snack.
So, just as a little disclaimer. The USDA says that you shouldn’t microwave paper bags, but I’ve never had a problem. So, if you set your microwave on fire, you are not allowed to blame me:) Don’t put oil in the bag and for heaven’s sake, don’t seal the bag with anything. Folding it over works just fine.
- 2 Tablespoons popcorn kernels
- Brown Paper bag – non wax coated
- Olive oil spray
- Your choice of seasonings
- Place kernels in the paper bag
- Fold bag over 3 times
- Microwave for 2 minutes – stop as soon as there is more than 1 second between pops
- Spray with olive oil
