Who’s ready for Halloween? Let the excessive candy season begin. Seriously, it doesn’t end until after Easter, so we are on the uphill of 6 months of candy, candy, and more candy – so since we are celebrating everything sweet, I was in the mood for a sweet treat and I am ready to kick off the season with these super cute Candy Corn Jello Cups (no actual candy required).
And in true Salubrious RD fashion, I added a little fruit to my dessert. My kids are begging for these, so I figured I better get on the move on and get this cute little treat up on the blog. I saw this idea of the colored jello for candy corn in a magazine a while back. It was just plain jello so I knew I had to try it with different fruits. It’s so good!!
There are a couple of points about this dessert that I think are important.
- No, I did not buy sugar free jello, but if you need to or want to – you go right ahead. My kids are super active and I don’t feel the least bit of a bad nutritionist mama by giving them regular jello
- I did buy fruit in 100% fruit juice and not heavy syrup – I do have some sugar standards when it comes to canned fruit. This is because I know I won’t use all of the fruit in this dessert and someone is going to eat it. I’d rather not have them drinking heavy syrup.
- This does take a little time. You knew that already though. You have to wait for the yellow layer to set up before you can do the orange layer.
- This travels so well! I did these in little glass jars with the lids and you can bring the cream in a separate container and top when you reach your destination if you so choose.
For your fruit – canned is really the best way to go. Fun fact – you cannot put fresh pineapple in jello, it won’t set up. So, if you’re using pineapple, you have to use canned. For the orange, you can use oranges or peaches, I chose peaches, because I couldn’t find oranges in 100% juice at my store – so peaches were the better choice for me.
I hope you try this for your next Halloween party or just for fun!
